Off to the Races: Olympic Skier Lindsey Vonn

When I suggest to Vonn that she essentially married her father, she sighs. “Yeah, pretty much.” Are you friendly with Thomas now? “I don’t talk to him.” True to her full-throttle nature, she doesn’t dwell on past mistakes either. “Honestly, I wouldn’t take anything back,” she says. “I wouldn’t change being married. It was good for me and I was happy for a period of time, and I learned a lot about myself.”

Last year, Lindsey admitted that she has suffered from recurring bouts of depression, something that grew worse during the final months of her marriage. Part of it might have been the sense that she wasn’t in control of her own life. (As her sister Laura says, “Everyone wants to be her coach. Everyone wants to tell her what to do.”) Not surprisingly, Lindsey has no plans to mix love and skiing again: “Doesn’t work. I think there needs to be a certain kind of understanding because it’s very hard for me to relate to someone who doesn’t do sports at a high level. That part is necessary. But to have business in the relationship is very difficult. It definitely did not work for me, and I would not recommend it. I would also not recommend getting married!” When I ask her if marriage will ever be in the cards for her again, she grimaces: “No, thanks! I am definitely not getting married. To anyone.”

Then, just as Vonn’s personal life settled down, she crashed, right after landing a jump halfway through a super-G course at the world championships in Austria—and totally blew out her right knee. (You can Google the moment, but brace yourself: You will feel and hear her pain.) She was airlifted off the slope to a nearby hospital. “The most painful part was before the surgery,” she says. “I didn’t have any ligaments, obviously. My knee was just loosey-goosey. It was awful.” In an instant, she went from training eight hours a day to being completely helpless. But within hours, her fight emerged. “I mean, you can’t tell her what to do,” says Laura, who lives in Florence and was traveling with Lindsey through her European tour. “One time I left her for a second and I found her scooting around on the floor trying to get something off the counter. She’s incorrigible.”
